Wrist Goal is HUAWEI's official World Cup companion app for Watch 5 and Somnio built it. Available now on the HUAWEI AppGallery, it turns live World Cup tracking into a glanceable, wrist-first experience, and it's the second project we've delivered with Huawei in under two years, both built natively on HarmonyOS.

What is Wrist Goal? HUAWEI's World Cup App for Watch 5

Wrist Goal is Huawei's official World Cup companion for Watch 5.
Instead of checking your phone every few minutes, fans can follow live matches, standings, and tournament progress directly from their watch.

The experience is fully integrated with Huawei Health, making live football updates feel like a natural extension of the device rather than another app to open.

"Enjoy live soccer scores on your Watch 5",  live World Cup results, one tap away.

Smartwatches are built for glances, not scrolling. A World Cup app that expects fans to unlock their phone every time a goal happens misses the entire point of wearing the device in the first place.

Huawei came to Somnio with that exact problem this World Cup season: deliver scores, match events, and critical moments straight to the wrist, on native HarmonyOS, without the lag or friction of a companion-phone-first design.

How the World Cup App works on HUAWEI watch 5

We designed the experience around the moments fans actually care about during a tournament.

Once users choose their national team, the app adapts around that journey, from upcoming matches to group standings and knockout progression.

Live notifications keep them updated without needing to open the app, while dedicated views for standings, top scorers, and brackets make it easy to stay connected to the tournament, even after their own team has been eliminated.

Three things happen on the watch that don't happen with a typical companion app:

  1. Team selection defines the whole World Cup experience. Once a user picks their national team, the app tailors itself around that team, group position, upcoming fixtures, and results.
  2. Real-time match alerts fire without opening the app. A lock-screen notification system pushes updates the moment a match starts, a goal is scored, or the final whistle blows.
  3. Full tournament context stays one tap away. Beyond a single team, three dedicated views cover the whole World Cup: group standings, a global explorer across every group and top scorer, and a live bracket for the elimination rounds.

That last point matters for retention. A fan whose own team is out of World Cup contention still has three more reasons to keep opening the app.

Our approach: Three phases from definition to launch

Like most of our product engagements, we started by aligning on the experience before writing code. Wearables have unique constraints, so getting the product definition right early makes a huge difference later.

Phase 1 — Product Definition: Align product vision, technology choices, and user experience before writing any code, so scope doesn't shift mid-build.

From there, we built iteratively, always balancing performance, battery efficiency, and real-time updates.

Phase 2 — Development: Build iteratively, with performance, real-time data handling, and battery efficiency treated as first-class constraints, not something bolted on before release.

Finally, we validated everything on real Watch 5 devices to ensure the experience was ready not just for AppGallery approval, but for the busiest moments of the tournament.

Phase 3 — UAT & Release: Validate on real HUAWEI Watch 5 devices, confirm AppGallery compliance, and support the live launch through peak usage moments,  in this case, World Cup match days, when load and attention both spike at once.

The technology behind a native HarmonyOS World Cup app

Wrist Goal is built natively for HarmonyOS NEXT, not wrapped or cross-compiled from another wearable OS. That decision shows up in a few concrete architectural choices:

Component What it does
Service Widgets (Tiles) Instant, glanceable access to live World Cup match information without opening the app
Real-time data layer Optimized for fast updates and critical event delivery during live matches
Huawei ID integration Frictionless sign-in tied to the user's existing Huawei account
Template-based architecture The same core system can be reused for other tournaments and leagues with minimal rework

That last row has the longest shelf life. Wrist Goal wasn't built as a single-tournament throwaway, it's a reusable platform that can support future international competitions, not just this World Cup, from the same codebase.

A growing partnership with Huawei

Wrist Goal also marks another milestone in our collaboration with Huawei. In less than two years, it's the second product we've had the opportunity to build together on HarmonyOS NEXT.

The first was MyBotPal, an AI-powered smartwatch assistant focused on voice interactions., also built on HarmonyOS NEXT.

MyBotPal combined voice interaction, haptic feedback, and smart integrations (GPS through TomTom, live weather data, and a LangGraph and OpenAI-powered conversational layer)  into a single wearable assistant, launched on the HUAWEI AppGallery in four languages.

Two very different products, a conversational assistant and a World Cup companion, but the same underlying pattern: native HarmonyOS development, under a fixed-scope engagement, validated against Huawei's own compliance and release process before launch. Both projects shared the same challenge: creating native wearable experiences that feel fast, intuitive, and ready for real users.

Results

Huawei featured Wrist Goal as a promoted experience inside the Huawei Health device hub for Watch 5 owners,  placement Huawei doesn't hand out by default. It's live for the current World Cup, already installed on Watch 5 devices worldwide, and built specifically to extend into future tournaments without a rebuild: a Euro, a regional league, the next World Cup cycle,  without a rebuild.

Can Wrist Goal be reused for other tournaments?

Yes. It's built on a template-based architecture designed so the same core system can support future international leagues and competitions with minimal additional work.

Conclusion

Wrist Goal is an app with a specific job: get World Cup moments onto a wrist in real time, without noise. That specificity,  a team-first interface, tournament-wide views, alerts that don't require opening anything,  is what makes a World Cup app worth keeping installed after the novelty wears off.

It's also the second time Huawei has trusted Somnio with a native HarmonyOS build, after MyBotPal. Different product, same discipline: define the product tightly, build for the constraints of a wearable, and validate against a real release process before calling it done.

For teams evaluating HarmonyOS, or wearable development more broadly, that discipline,  not the framework,  is usually what determines whether a product ships on time and holds up under real usage.
